SEQUESTER CUTS MEANS CUTS TO SENIOR TRANSPORTATION

The federal sequester means cuts to transportation for senior citizens in Washington County.

The County Commissioners amended a memorandum of understanding with the Brazos Valley Council of Governments for the transportation of senior citizens.  Washington County Judge John Brieden says the original funding for the bus for the seniors was $846 a month. He said after the sequester the funding was cut to $597 a month.  The latest stage in the cuts will bring the amount down to $500 a month.  The Judge said the Washington County Healthy Living Association was not able to meet their expenses at $846 and they need to find other forms of funding.

The bus takes senior citizens to medical appointments, shopping trips and to the senior citizen center for activities.
