BLINN BOARD CANCELS BRAZOS COUNTY LAND PURCHASE

  

After getting petitions with hundreds of signatures, and numerous public comments, the Blinn Board of Trustees voted to terminate a contract for property to expand the Brazos County campus in College Station.

There was a strong contingent of neighbors in the Lynntech area, in the 2500 block of the Earl Rudder Freeway at last (Monday) night’s meeting, opposing the property purchase.  Several of them spoke, saying placing the expanded campus would permanently ruin their neighborhood, cause landowners to turn residential housing into student housing, cause noise and traffic congestion.

One of the speakers was Cherly Wenck, who told the Board this move would harm the quality of life in her neighborhood.

The Board terminated its purchase contract for the 53.8 acres, and the long vacated building in College Station.

In February, Dallas based architectural desing and planning firm BOKA Powell  presented Blinn’s trustees with an immediate, shot and long term solutions for the growth in Brazos County.  Blinn has increased enrollment in Brazos County by over 31 percent. The Brazos County campus is expected to have more than 20,000 students by the year 2017.

Most of the speakers recommended to the Board that they seek another location to expand.
