WASHINGTON COUNTY PROPERTY OWNERS WARNED OF LETTER SCAM
Property owners in Washington County are being warned about a letter being sent to residents from a company in California urging them obtain documents from the company that can be obtained by the homeowner for a much lower price.
A letter is being sent out in an official –looking envelope telling the homeowner that for $83, the company can send the homeowner a copy of their deed and a “property assessment profile.”
This information can be obtained at the county clerk’s office at the Washington County Courthouse for $1 a page.
The company, Record Service Company, out of California, has received an “F” rating from t the Better Business Bureau in three cities in California, and was sued by Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller for using misleading mailers and overcharging for its services.
The letter does contain a disclaimer saying that “the company is not associated with governmental agency,” and that this same information may be obtained by the homeowner in the county where the deed is recorded.
