Former Radio Central program host Andy Smith has died Thursday at a Giddings nursing home.

In 1973 Smith began hosting a program called Cattle Country on KWHI, where he would analyze and comment on every aspect of the agriculture industry for nearly a half-hour each day.  That program ran for over 20 years, until Smith’s retirement in 1994.  Smith would end every show with his familiar line, “If you eat, you’re involved in agriculture.”

Andy was born in Cooks Point in 1919.  He graduated from Caldwell High School and went on to attend Sam Houston St. University.  He served as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army and was part of the first wave to hit Japan after the bombing of Hiroshima.

Smith founded the Lee County Cattlemen’s Association and became very active in the Lee County Junior Livestock Show.

Funeral services for Andy Smith will be held Monday morning at 10:00 at First Presbyterian Church in Giddings.
