COMMISSIONERS APPROVE MUCH-NEEDED STOP SIGN IN SUBDIVISION

  

The Washington County Commissioners approved the placement of two stop signs at the intersection of Mustang Road and Heather Glen, in the Gun and Rod subdivision.

Several residents from the area told the commissioners court today (Tuesday) that they were concerned for the safety of their families as well as other due to the frequencies of cars speeding through that particular area, and hoped that the stop signs would be a first step in stopping these occurrences.

The Washington County Sherriff’s Department had been spending brief periods of time sitting at the intersection, but could not spend any more time in that area for any length of time.

Other alternatives, along with the stop signs were brought up. Commissioner Kirk Hanath asked the group from the subdivision who attended the meeting whether widening the road would also help. One resident suggested that putting a sidewalk in would be more beneficial that widening the road, and that the road being widen might make people speed even more.

Also discussed and approved was the proclamation proclaiming April as Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month in Washington County.

Several representatives from CASA for Kids were present for the proclamation, telling the commissioners of the desperate need for foster homes in the area. There are currently only two in the county, and one was about to move out of the area, so the need is great for the foster homes, as well as CASA advocates.

The commissioners also approved the purchase of a Recording System for the Washington County 911 department, in the amount of $30,363 from Data Vox, who has supplied equipment to the county for many years.

The system records all 911 calls, and has the ability to store them for three years, to be used in court cases, when needed. The calls are stored digitally, and eventually will be able to be shared with the City of Brenham offices when needed. Installation of the new system should begin in six weeks or less.
