ROTARY DONATES TO FIREFIGHTERS FOR NYC RUN

  

The Brenham Rotary Club is helping to send some volunteer Washington County firefighters to New York City later this month to participate for the first time in the Tunnel to Tower 5K.

Several local firefighters will represent Texas and Washington County at this year’s run which will be held on September 27.  It is the first time any Washington County firefighters will participate.

Ronnie Perry of the Rocky Creek Fire Department and Dustin Brown of the Chappell Hill Fire Department were on hand at the club’s Tuesday meeting to accept a check for $400 from the club.

The Tunnel to Tower 5K is an event to honor New York firefighter Steven Siller and the firefighters of the FDNY.

During the terrorist attacks of September 11th, Siller, was faced with the obstacle of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel being blocked by traffic, so he parked his rig, grabbed his gear and ran the 3 miles to the towers of the World Trade Center. Siller died in the collapse of the towers.

Perry and Brown will complete the 5K wearing all of their firefighting gear, which weighs about 75 pounds, just as Siller did that day.

They are seeking $2,400 in donations from citizens and businesses of Washington County to help cover some of their travel costs.
