WASHINGTON COUNTY JAIL PASSES SURPRISE INSPECTION
According to Sheriff Otto Hanak, on Monday, June 6, 2016, a surprise jail inspection was performed at the Washington County jail. This inspection, conducted by Texas Jail Commission Inspector Fred St. Amant, lasted over 9 hours with the analysis of paperwork efficiency, emergency operations, jail policy and procedure, jailer certifications, and numerous other topics. Since 2013, our goal has been to bring the jail up to and to even exceed standards with regard to supervision, data entry, professionalism, and overall cleanliness and healthy environment. In addition, our staff works hard each day with preventative maintenance to ensure the jail will last another 20 years. Since beginning a major paint project in our jail last year, we have completed 95% of the work with all being done by inmate labor. Knowing that a jail is a major expense to taxpayers, our focus is saving those tax dollars the best way possible, yet conforming to State law and jail policy.
I commend our entire jail staff and their leadership for their hard work and professionalism over the past four successful inspections. It is an amazing task that any jail can pass inspection one year, let alone four years in a row.
