WASHINGTON COUNTY AMATEUR RADIO CLUB TO PARTICIPATE IN FIELD DAY
Despite the Internet, cell phones, email and modern communications, every year whole regions find themselves in the dark. Tornadoes, fires, storms, ice and even the occasional cutting of fiber optic cables leave people without the means to communicate. In these cases, the one consistent service that has never failed has been Amateur Radio.
These radio operators, often called "hams" provide backup communications for everything from the American Red Cross to FEMA and even for the International Space Station. Your Town’s "hams" will join with thousands of other Amateur Radio operators showing their emergency capabilities during the annual ARRL Field Day.
The Washington County Amateur Radio Club is proud to announce they will be participating in Field Day on June 25th – June 26th . This annual event, called "Field Day" is sponsored by the ARRL, the national association for Amateur Radio taking place at the Salem Volunteer Fire Department at 251 Salem Road. Using only emergency power supplies, ham operators will construct emergency stations in parks, shopping malls, schools and backyards around the country. The object of this event is to "work" as may other stations around the world, while operating in adverse conditions. The slogan, "When All Else Fails, Ham Radio Works" is more than just words to hams operators as they test their ability send messages in many forms without the use of phone systems, internet or any other infrastructure that can be compromised in a crisis.
The Washington County Amateur Radio Club would like to invite the public to come and see ham radio’s capabilities and learn about amateur radio between 1:00pm and 6:00pm.
For anyone who would l like to take a ham radio license exam, Field Day will be kicked off with a Volunteer Examiner Testing Session at 10:00am. The actual Field Day Event will start at 1:00pm and run for 24 hours. Please join the Washington County Amateur Radio Club for Field Day…
