BRENHAM SCHOOL BOARD HEARS STAAR/EOC TEST RESULTS

  

Brenham ISD Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Jamey Johnson briefed the school board on the STAAR/EOC test scores at their meeting Monday evening.  The standardized test results are late arriving this year after numerous glitches occurred during the testing this spring.  Johnson stated that scores were up in several areas including 4th grade reading and 5th grade math.  100 percent of the Jr. High students mastered the algebra portion and the 4th grade limited English proficient students showed a 25 percent improvement over last year.  Due to the late arrival of the test scores, administrators and teachers have a very limited amount of time to make adjustments in the curriculum for the upcoming school year.  Superintendent Walter Jackson pointed out that the district will not relegate all their efforts to a single test score and because of the testing problems, they will be following the upcoming state legislative session closely.

In other action, the board named Allan Colvin as the new Assistant Principal at PRIDE Academy / DAEP.  Colvin taught at Brenham High School for 11 years and has taught at PRIDE Academy the past 3 years.

The board voted to accept an existing fence line as the boundary between school property and the Camptown Cemetery.  A group of citizens working to preserve the African American cemetery requested the boundary line be agreed upon.  No deed of record has been located for the Camptown Cemetery that was located behind Pickard High School.

The board also accepted a $2500 donation from the Brenham Elks Lodge for the Brenham High School CTE department.  The donation will go towards their 3D printing and prosthesis projects.

In other action, Board Secretary Susan Jenkins was named as this year’s voting delegate to the Texas Association of School Administrators and School Boards convention in September.
