BUILDING AND STANDARDS COMMISSION TO CONSIDER HISTORIC BUILDING

  

The Building and Standards Commission will meet next Wednesday to discuss the fate of the old St. Anthony Laundry Building.

The building, located at 209 S. Market Street in Brenham, has been damaged by weather for years, causing the roof to give way.  The owners of the two-story building, Kent Brownell and Mary Corona, are now seeking bids to have it torn down.

The building is one of the oldest remaining in downtown Brenham. An application has been made for listing it in the National Register of Historic Places.

In the 1900’s, it served as the laundry facility for the historic St. Anthony Hotel. Later it was operated as Fabric Care Service, owned by the Sanders family until 2005.

In July of 2014 the Brenham City Council authorized the City Attorney to pursue legal remedies against the owners, to require them to bring the building up to code.  The exterior of the building had been painted, but the building remained vulnerable to the weather.

The Laundry Building is now designated as an “unsafe structure” and will be the topic of the Brenham’s Building Standards Commission on Wednesday.

The Commission will meet on September 7th at 5:15 p.m. in the Second Floor Council Chambers at Brenham Municipal Building.
