BISD SCHOOL BOARD SETS LEGISLATIVE AGENDA

  

The Brenham Independent School District Board of Trustees met on Monday to set the school district’s legislative agenda.

The agenda includes items they would like to see addressed by lawmakers in Austin next year. Natalie Lange, the President of the Board of Trustees, said that it’s important to let the lawmakers know what Brenham students need. The Board of Trustees named their legislative priorities as:

1. The BISD Board of Trustees vigorously opposes the A-F school rating system.
2. The Board of Trustees wants lawmakers to ensure adequate public school funding.
3. The BISD School Board wants STARR testing to play less of a role in schools.
4. BISD Board of Trustees opposes any bill that promotes vouchers being used to fund charter schools.
5. The Board of Trustees opposes any public school funds being used to support private or parochial schools.
6. The BISD Board of Trustees encourages the strengthening of the university systems in Texas.

The BISD Board of Trustee’s Vice President, Melvin Ehlert, said this is an important time to recognize these priorities as Brenham Public Schools are getting less funding than they were in 2011, yet STARR testing is becoming harder. Ehlert went on to say that the schools are “being asked to excel, without the proper funding”.
