LOCAL FOURTH GRADERS ATTEND AG-DAY

  

Over 400 fourth grade students attended the annual Ag Day at the Washington County Fairgrounds, this week, sponsored by the Washington County Farm Bureau and the Texas Agri Life Extension Agency.

Teachers and students arrived by bus at 8:30 AM to visit 17 areas of agriculture. Speakers at each station spoke about their way of life that provides food, fiber and services in agriculture of every day life.

Washington County Farm Bureau President Larry Winkelmann said that "since the students are four generations away from the farm, this knowledge is very important, that's why we want to be the voice of Ag."

The Washington County Cattlewomen provided a beef hotdog dinner and  Blue Bell Ice Cream  for all the students, teachers, and volunteers.

Students visited stations of; wildlife, cotton, corn, nature, health, vet science, bees, dairy, swine, rabbit, beef, soil, poultry, sheep and goat, blacksmith, equine and farm equipment.

Texas AgriLife extension agent Charles Seeley stated:  "it takes a lot of volunteers to put on this successful event every year. This includes speakers, the 4-H and FFA leaders, plus many other supporters."

Each student and teacher was presented with a T-shirt and a packet of information for the classroom.  This event has been held for nearly 20 years.
