SEALY TRUSTEES MAINTAIN OVERALL TAX RATE

The Sealy school board voted to keep its tax rate the same for the new year at a recent meeting.

Although parts of the rate have been altered, the overall rate will remain at $1.39 per $100.  The maintenance and operations rate rose to $1.11, from $1.04.  However, debt services fell from $0.35 to $0.28, a 7-cent difference for each rate.

During the presentation of Sealy ISD’s chief financial officer Jim Obermeier, he said that Texas Tax Code allows school boards to adjust their budgets without election, if their area is considered to be within a year of federal disaster.

Rates will go back to their previous amount after this year, but the overall rate will stay the same.

The maintenance and operations budget accounts for the new elementary school project with a net excess.

Both Sealy Elementary and Maggie B Selman Elementary were ready for the start of the new school year on August 27th, even with minor construction still scheduled for the next few months.  This is due to a back order on hardware that prevented contractors from completing certain projects before school started.

Project Manager Mike Zapalac told the board that contractors will be working on weekends until around Thanksgiving, with final billings in October.
