BLINN SOCIAL WORK COURSE AT BRENHAM, BRYAN CAMPUSES APPLIES TOWARD NEW RELLIS DEGREE PATHWAY
Course applies toward Tarleton State University’s Bachelor of Social Work degree coming in Fall 2020
The Blinn College District now offers a social work course that creates a unique pathway for students interested in earning their Bachelor of Social Work degree. SOCW 2361: Introduction to Social Work, offered at both the Bryan and Brenham campuses in Spring 2020, applies directly to the new social work degree program Tarleton State University will launch at the RELLIS Campus in Fall 2020.
Tarleton State University, part of the Texas A&M University System, currently offers its Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W) degree at its main campus in Stephenville, as well as at off-campus locations in Fort Worth, Waco, and online.
By expanding its program to the RELLIS Campus, Tarleton State provides Bryan-College Station area students unique access to a rewarding career path.
Tarleton State’s program prepares students to become effective social work practitioners committed to enhancing the well-being of marginalized populations. Graduates complete the program with the skills to take the licensure examination administered by the State of Texas and obtain direct human service professional positions.
“We’re excited to expand our social work program and reach more students interested in this impactful career,” said Dr. Melody Aye Loya, Department Head of Social Work for Tarleton State University. “This partnership with Blinn is an added benefit because we’re able to connect with even more individuals dedicated to serving their communities.”
SOCW 2361: Introduction to Social Work provides an overview of the history and development of the social work profession, including the values, ethics, and areas of practice utilized under a Generalist Intervention Model.
“This course introduces students to the numerous career options available within the social work field,” said Robert Stanberry, Department Head. “We hope to connect Blinn students to this meaningful area and generate a future bridge to Tarleton State’s B.S.W. degree for those interested in continuing their education.”
Social workers can work in a variety of settings, including mental health clinics, schools, child welfare and human service agencies, hospitals, and private practice. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2018 the median pay for social workers was $49,470 per year and employment is expected to grow 11% nation-wide between 2018 and 2028, resulting in 81,200 additional positions.
Registration is now open for Blinn’s Winter Minimester and Spring 2020 semester. College officials encourage early registration for convenient scheduling and placement in high-demand courses.
