A traffic stop on I-10 leads to the discovery of 16 pounds of black tar heroin hidden in the vehicle.

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that Tuesday the Narcotics Canine Unit, Sargent Randy Thumann and K9 partner Kolt, stopped a Chevy Malibu on Interstate 10 just after noon for a traffic violation. After speaking to the driver, Sargent Thumann became suspicious that the driver was smuggling illegal narcotics.  Thumann was given consent to search the vehicle and deployed his canine “Kolt” to conduct an exterior sweep of the vehicle. Kolt indicated to the vehicle for the presence of illegal narcotics. A search of the vehicle revealed approximately 16 pounds of black tar heroin, with a street value of approximately $700,000 dollars, which was concealed in the battery.  The driver Jose Luis Martinez Jr., 31 of Laredo, was arrested for Felony Heroin Possession and taken to the Fayette County Jail.
