The Buccaneers’ record is now 1-0-1 for the young season.

Blinn scored an own goal during the game’s opening minutes as the Buccaneers tried to clear an over-the-top pass, but the ball was flicked into their own net, giving the visitors from Southlake, Texas, an early 1-0 lead.

The Bucs scored the equalizer during a second half in which they dominated play. Forward Marco Del Vecchio, a freshman from Hurst, Texas, scored the goal with an assist from midfielder Cesar Cabrera.

“We were very generous hosts,” head coach Michael McBride said with a laugh. “We scored for them as well as us, but it was a really enjoyable game. We learned a lot about our team. We’ve got plenty to look at in the video.

“The second half, we were quite dominant. We just couldn’t put the ball into the net.”

Assistant coach Rudy Roediger said the Bucs are continuing to look for continuity on the field.

“We still haven’t given up a goal to the opposition, but we’ve still got a long way to go,” Roediger said. “As a unit, we’re not cohesive yet, but we’re making progress.”

Blinn won its season opener last Thursday, an 11-0 win over Crush Soccer Club. The Bucs will open conference play Saturday, Aug. 28, on the road against Northeast Texas Community College at 4 p.m.

The Blinn women’s team will open its 2021 season and conference schedule Saturday, Aug. 28, also on the road against Northeast Texas Community College. That game is scheduled for 2 p.m. The team’s season opener Aug. 21 against Crush Soccer Club was canceled.
