Local and area first responders were given free meals and a “thank you” for their service during an appreciation lunch today (Friday) at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham.

Around 150 sausage wrap lunches were served during the event, which was held in honor of all first responders and in remembrance of September 11, 2001.

Memorial Oaks Chapel Funeral Director Clarence Gerke said this event is something the funeral home has been wanting to do for years, and feels it was fitting to start on the weekend of the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

Gerke said he hopes to make this an annual event around the weekend of 9/11.

Memorial Oaks thanks Felder’s Buy-N-Bye and Chappell Hill Sausage Company for contributing to the lunch.
