14TH ANNUAL ‘POLSKIE KOLĘDY’ SATURDAY IN CHAPPELL HILL
A Polish holiday tradition dating back to the 14th century will be celebrated this weekend in Chappell Hill.
The 14th Annual “Polskie Kolędy” is set for Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. The program will include the singing of Polish Christmas carols and a tribute to Polish ancestors.
Texas A&M University professor Dr. Jim Mazurkiewicz, who is the emcee for the event, says the custom typically begins on December 26th, known as St. Stephen’s Day. Carolers walk from house to house between Christmas and the Feast of the Epiphany, wearing folk costumes while singing carols and enacting nativity plays.
After the program convenes at the church, attendees will visit the church cemetery at 2:15 p.m. They will then travel to the Chappell Hill Museum at 4 p.m. for a special concert with Brian Marshall and special guest Troy Gawlak from Akron, Ohio. Food will be provided by Chappell Hill Bakery & Deli and members of the Chappell Hill Museum.
A mass at the church will be held at 6 p.m., with Kolędy hymns beginning at 5:45 p.m. The program will adjourn at 7:15 p.m.
The public is invited to participate in the celebration.
