The public is invited to join in the celebration of a milestone for the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library in Brenham.
On Tuesday, beginning at 11 a.m., the library will celebrate its 120th birthday party, a year later due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hosted by the library and the Fortnightly Club of Brenham, the day commemorates the founding of the library by club members on February 19, 1901.
The event will include club members portraying the founding members of the library in period dress, a showcase of books from three area authors, a children’s program with Miss LouLou, and birthday cake, cookies and beverages.

Authors who will be in attendance include Susan Stanley Broesche, a retired Texas educator; Wendy Isaac Bergin, principal flutist of Houston’s Opera in the Heights Orchestra; and children’s author Fawn Young.

Early locations for the library included two rooms behind the Giddings & Giddings Bank building, then two upstairs rooms in a city hall building. Club members collected books, raised money and served as librarians and as members of the library board, which oversaw operations from 1901 to the 1970s.
When a new library building was opened, operations were turned over to the City of Brenham, with club members continuing to offer volunteer support, including book sales to raise donations. The club’s annual Used Book Sale will be held February 21-26 at the Washington County Expo.
120th birthday as in the opening of the original library. The name, Nancy Carol Roberts was not instituted until after her death in the early 1970’s. Am I not correct on this?
Yes, you are correct.
