BURTON CITY COUNCIL APPROVES ELECTION ITEMS

The Burton City Council approved several items preparing for the city’s election coming up on May 7th at its meeting Tuesday.

Councilmembers accepted an election order and approved an election services contract between the city and Washington County.  The council seats of Position Two, held by Tommie Gilmon, and Position Three, held by Jason Schoenvogel, will be up for election.

The council also removed an item from the agenda regarding Schoenvogel’s resignation from the council.  Schoenvogel clarified that he is not resigning from the council, but is not running for re-election at the end of his current term on May 7th.  Schoenvogel has served on the council since May 2020.

In other action Tuesday, the council approved the audit for the Fiscal Year ending March 31, 2021, performed by Medack & Oltmann, LLP.  James Medack of Medack & Oltmann said during his presentation that the disbanding of the municipal court last year led to $174,000 in uncollected fines and fees.  Medack noted that not all of the money would have gone to the city, as “a very large chunk” of it would go to the state, but he could not immediately provide the total of what the city would have derived from that amount.

Also on Tuesday, the council:

  • Approved the donation of police equipment and supplies to the Washington County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office.
  • Denied a mobile home variance for parcel #R27343 located on South Brazos Street.
  • Tabled appointing a committee member from Burton to serve on the Washington County Appraisal District Budget Committee for 2022-23.
  • Approved the Washington County Appraisal District 2022-23 Audit.
  • Approved the closure of North Railroad Street between West Washington Street and West Texas Street for Ranger Day on March 12th. The Post Office driveway will be left open.
