BRENHAM CUBETTE SOFTBALL CRUSHES MAGNOLIA WEST 20-8 ON OPENING NIGHT

Mustangs led 4-1 after three innings, but Cubettes outscored them 19-3 over final four innings

The Brenham Cubette Softball Team started the season off on a good note with a 20-8 victory over Magnolia West after an over three hour marathon game.

Magnolia West jumped out to an early 4-0 in the first inning. In the top of the second, Sarah Mabie started it off with a double. She later scored after Halle Scheel reached based on a error by the Lady Mustangs to make it 4-1.

Magnolia West added another run in the bottom of the third inning to take a 5-1 lead.

In the fourth inning, the Cubettes rally began. Mabie struck out, but reached base on a passed ball. Riley Meyer slugged an RBI double that brought Mabie home to make it 5-2.  Scheel then hit an RBI single that scored Meyer to make it 5-3. Avery Maurer then drove home Scheel with an RBI single, and the lead was down to just one run 5-4.

Kenley Mikolajchak led off the fifth inning with a single. Mabie followed two batters later with an RBI double that tied the game 5-5. Meyer reached on an error by Mustang second baseman Alivia Kiser, which allowed Mabie to score to put Brenham in front 6-5. Meyer advanced to second base on the throw home, but catcher Haleigh McDonald air-mailed the throw to second, which allowed Meyer to come all the way in and score to make it 7-5.

The Cubettes batted sent ten batters to the plate in the sixth inning. Maurer led off the inning with a double and Kaylyn Rodriguez drew a walk. Mikolajchak hit an RBI single that scored Maurer to make it 8-5. Annie Beckendorf followed with an RBI single that scored Rodriguez to push the lead to 9-5. Later that inning, Meyer stroked a two run single that scored Mikolajchak and Beckendorf. That put Brenham on top 11-5. Kayley Rodriguez reached on an RBI single that scored Meyer to make it 12-5. Scheel then slapped an RBI single that brought home Rodriguez to extend it to 13-5.

Brenham would then bat a round in the seventh inning. Kaylyn Rodriguez  and Kenley Mikolajchak led off the inning with a pair of singles. Beckendorf had an RBI double that scored Rodriguez to make it 14-5. After Mabie walked, Meyer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded allowing Mikolajchak to score and put Brenham up 15-5. Kayley Rodriguez grounded out to third, but that allowed Beckendorf to score to make it 16-5. After Scheel got walked, Maurer followed with a two run double to make it 18-5. Kaylyn Rodriguez reach on another Lady Mustang fielding error that allowed Scheel and Maurer to score to make it 20-5.

Magnolia West had a three run rally in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough, as the Cubettes held on for the win.

Della Jasinski picked up her first victory in the circle. She went all seven innings, allowing eight runs, only four were earned, seven hits, six walks, and eight strikeouts.

The Cubettes now get ready to host the annual Leadoff Classic, which runs Thursday through Saturday.
