LEE COUNTY MAN ARRESTED FOR CATTLE THEFT

While on probation for cattle theft, a Lee County man was once again arrested for selling cattle that weren’t his.

Wilbur Eugene Jackson was arrested after an investigation by the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association.

The case began in March when an owner of the Brenham Livestock Auction Barn noticed a suspicious seller brought in a group of calves with both ear tips notched.

Special Ranger Kenny Murchison was called to investigate the situation and found no reports of missing calves matching the description from the sale barn.

On May 10, Murchison received a call from a Lee County rancher reporting 11 missing calves that were stolen from a locked pen. The rancher gave a description of the calves including that both ear tips were notched.

During an interview, Murchison showed the rancher a picture of Jackson, the man who sold the calves in Brenham.

The rancher confirmed that Jackson had worked for him for several years.

Murchison sent out a report to other rangers in the area to check auction barns for the 11 calves that were sold by Jackson.

Special Ranger Brent Mast notified Murchison that a group of calves were sold by Jackson on May 7 at the Navasota Livestock Auction.

A surveillance video at the barn revealed that Jackson indeed sold the calves matching the description of the reported missing calves.

After obtaining an arrest warrant for a probation violation, Jackson was taken into custody by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, and transported to the Lee County Jail in Giddings.

He remains in jail on a $250,000 bond.

The Grand Jury later indicted Jackson on two counts of Theft of Livestock. Due to Jackson’s criminal history, both charges were enhanced to first degree felonies, and he was filed on as a habitual offender.

Ranger Murchison and the Cattle Raisers Association would like to thank the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the Lee County Attorney’s Office, Special Ranger Mast, the Brenham Livestock Auction Barn, and the Navasota Livestock Auction for their joint effort in the investigation.
