WASHINGTON CO. HISTORICAL COMMISSION EARNS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
The Washington County Historical Commission (WCHC) has received an award from the state.
Members of the WCHC were recognized by Washington County Commissioners on Tuesday, after it received a distinguished service award from the Texas Historical Commission (THC) for its efforts in 2021.
The THC presents distinguished service awards to county historical commissions that document well-rounded programs that preserve and promote Texas history.
After accepting the award, WCHC Chair Tom Stevens gave County Judge John Durrenberger a collection of photos from the organization’s second annual “Gone to Texas” history camp held this summer at Washington-on-the-Brazos. The collection included the signatures of all the children who attended the camp.
Stevens said the WCHC is fortunate to have “a great asset” like Washington-on-the-Brazos and to be able to partner with the Boys and Girls Club of Washington County to put on the camp.
Durrenberger said children need to know their history, adding that what the WCHC is doing “is very, very important.” Commissioner Don Koester said he and many others are proud to live in Washington County, and the camp is a good way to show people why they are proud of it. Commissioner Kirk Hanath said the WCHC is “giving back to the next generation,” who are “learning something that they can have forever.”
Washington County is one of 82 counties with historical commissions that received distinguished service awards for 2021. Area counties that were also recognized include Austin, Brazos, Burleson, Fayette and Waller.
