BRENHAM CUBS BEAT HUNTSVILLE 31-17 TO SET UP DISTRICT TITLE SHOWDOWN
Moving the game up a day earlier didn't affect the Brenham Cub Football Team at all as they defeated the Huntsville Hornets 31-17 at Cub Stadium last (Thursday) night.
Rylan Wooten got the scoring started early with a 27 yard touchdown pass to Keith Crawford. Grant Mayfield added the extra point to make 7-0 Cubs with 9:29 left in the first quarter.
Cartelle Brown picked up right where he left off last week with a 15 yard touchdown run. Mayfield hit the extra point to make it 14-0 Cubs with 3:56 to go in the first quarter.
Just as soon as the second quarter started, Huntsville's Chris Ruiz scored on a 28 yard touchdown run. Joseph Mejia added the extra point to cut the Brenham lead to 14-7 at the 11:53 mark.
Ricky Brown ran one in from two yards out and Mayfield added the extra point to increase the Cub lead to 21-7 with 4:53 left in the half.
Huntsville Quarterback Jawann Giddens then punched one in from eight yards out, and Mejia added the extra point with 1:25 to go in the second quarter. That made it 21-14 with Brenham in the lead at halftime.
The second half started with a 27 yard field goal by Mayfield to put the Cubs up 24-14 at the 8:37 mark.
Huntsville would counter with a 20 yard field goal by Mejia to cut the lead to 24-17 with 1:38 left in the third quarter.
Brenham finished off the scoring with Wooten scoring on a seven yard touchdown run with 2:18 in the fourth quarter to increase the Cub lead to 31-17.
Huntsville tried one more march down the field to get into scoring position, but Ivan Salazar intercepted a Giddens' pass to seal the deal.
The Cubs improved to 6-3 on the season and 5-0 in district. Next week, they will be traveling to Montgomery to face Lake Creek (9-0, 5-0) for the District Championship. Lake Creek had a bye this week.
