BRENHAM CUBETTE SOFTBALL PREVIEW

Coming off run that saw them go three rounds deep into the playoffs last season, the Brenham Cubettes get ready to start the 2023 campaign looking for more.

Last season, the Cubettes went 25-11-2 on the season.  They finished in a tie with A&M Consolidated for second place, with both teams having 11-5 district records, but then beat the Lady Tigers in a one game playoff.

Brenham went on to beat New Caney in bi-district, and Elgin in the area round, before falling to Kingwood Park in the region quarterfinals.

The Cubettes are in their second full week of scrimmages to get ready for the season.  Coach Katie Roberts discussed the importance of the scrimmages.

Brenham scrimmaged Waller and Willis back on January 28. One of the concerns Coach Roberts had is that they didn’t hit the ball well.  However, with the recent scrimmages against La Grange, Bellville, Klein, Bridgeland, and Paetow, those concerns are quickly being erased.

The Cubettes have one more three team scrimmage on Saturday at Bryan. They will face McNeil at 1pm, and then Bryan at 3pm.

Brenham returns most of their starters from last season including P Della Jasinski, 2B/OF Sarah Mabie, SS Avery Maurer, 3B/C Annie Beckendorf, OF Halle Scheel, OF Kinley Antkowiak, and OF/DH Kaylie Rodriguez. They will have two spots to fill following last year’s graduation of starters Kinley Mikolajchak (first base) and Cortney Ragnes (catcher).

According to Roberts, Kaylyn Rodriguez has taken over the duties at first base. Meanwhile, Annie Beckendorf and newcomer Stella Landry, who transferred to Brenham from Montgomery, have both been seeing time at catcher.

Another new addition to the team is assistant coach Olivia Van Hook. Van Hook is a former Cubette outfielder, who had been an assistant coach under former Brenham Head Coach Wade Wilson at Texas Lutheran University.

Roberts talked about what Van Hook brings to the table.

The District has also seen some changes as well.  Brenham, A&M Consolidated, College Station, Magnolia, Magnolia West, and Bryan Rudder remain.  Paetow, Jordan, and Waller are in other districts.  They have been replaced by Montgomery and Lake Creek.

Coach Roberts gave an early evaluation of the new district.

The Brenham Cubettes open the season next Tuesday, February 14, at 6pm in Caldwell.  We will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 5:35pm on KWHI 1280AM, 101.7FM, and KWHI.com.
