BRENHAM CUBETTES OPEN SEASON WITH 11-1 WIN OVER CALDWELL

The Brenham Cubette Softball Team opened the season with an 11-1 run rule victory over Caldwell last (Tuesday) night.

Brenham got on the board with six runs in the first inning when Lady Hornet pitcher Avery Smith had trouble finding the strike zone.

Smith walked the first four batters she faced Avery Maurer, Halle Scheel, Kaylyn Rodriguez, and Annie Beckendorf. Maurer scored on a wild pitch. Sarah Mabie then smacked a two run double that brought home Scheel and Rodriguez. Kinley Antkowiak also brought home a run on an RBI groundout. Kyla Garcia walked and later came around to score on another wild pitch. Brenham led 6-0 after half an inning.

It would stay that way until the bottom of the third when Caldwell scored on an RBI single by Smith that brought home Jillian Vykukal to make it a 6-1 game.

The Cubettes got the run back as Kaylyn Rodriguez singled, and then came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Mabie that made it 7-1 Brenham.

The Cubettes then scored four more runs in the top of the fifth to put the run rule into effect. Antkowiak singled, and pinch-hitter Nevaeh Holmes reached on an error. Maurer then unloaded a two run double that just missed being a three run homer to centerfield. Maurer scored on an RBI triple by Scheel. Scheel would then scored on a sacrifice fly by Rodriguez. Those runs made the game 11-1.

Newcomer Heidi Busker then pitched a scoreless fifth inning to seal the win.

Brenham (1-0) now gets ready to host the Leadoff Classic Thursday-Saturday at Alumni Field. On Thursday, they will face Idalou, and former Cubette Coach Walt Mangan, at 11am. They will then face Abilene Wylie at 5pm (4:35pm on KWHI).
