BURTON CITY COUNCIL APPROVES WATER & SEWER ORDINANCE OUTLINING NEW RATES
The Burton City Council approved an increase to city water and sewer rates with the passage of an ordinance at its meeting Tuesday.
The ordinance outlines and establishes new water and sewer rates as well as payment procedures for the rates, services, taps and line extensions.
City Secretary Angela Harrington said rates will increase in April for all customers due to inflation and rising costs. She declined to provide a specific amount as to how much the rates will increase, as she said she wanted to let customers know first with the notice that will be sent out with their next bill.
Also on Tuesday, the council approved an order of election, election services contract between the City of Burton and Washington County, and an interlocal contract between the city and Burton ISD for the May 6th general election. It then appointed election judges and clerks and set their hourly rates.
The council scheduled a public hearing for the 2023-24 general budget and water and sewer budget for March 14th at 5:30 p.m. In addition, it accepted an engagement letter as submitted by Medack & Oltmann, LLP to perform the annual audit of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2023.
Councilmembers also approved:
- A resolution authorizing the city to enter into an agreement with the state to close a segment of the state highway system in the downtown area of the city for the annual Cotton Gin Festival scheduled for April 15th.
- An ordinance changing the price per square foot stated in the procedures for seeking approval of acquisition of road and alleyway abandoned right of way policy.
- An ordinance authorizing and directing the mayor pro-tem to abandon, close and convey a portion of the Pecan Street right-of-way abutting 820 North Colorado Street to Belinda Gwin.
