CUBETTES WIN TWO ON FIRST DAY OF LEADOFF CLASSIC
The Brenham Cubette Softball Team picked up two wins on the first day of the annual Leadoff Classic at Alumni Field.
In the first game, the Cubettes defeated Idalou 5-2. In the bottom of the first, Halle Scheel drew a one out walk, and came around to score on an RBI double by Kaylyn Rodriguez to make it 1-0 Cubettes.
In the bottom of the third, Avery Maurer walked, then stole both 2nd base and 3rd base. Scheel then singled her home to make it 2-0 Brenham. Scheel then scored on a passed ball to increase the lead to 3-0.
Rodriguez followed with a walk, and then Annie Beckendorf doubled her home to make it 4-0.
Brenham got one more run in the bottom of the 5th, Scheel singled, stole second, and then scored on an RBI single by Sarah Mabie to make it 5-0.
Idalou scratched out a couple of runs in the top of the 6th.
Della Jasinski got the win going six innings, allowing three hits, two runs, one walk, and struck out seven.
The Cubettes then beat Abilene Wylie 7-2. In the first inning, Maurer started it off with a triple. Scheel followed with a walk, and then the pair executed a double steal with Maurer stealing home to make it 1-0 Brenham.
Wylie scored a couple of runs to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the 2nd.
The Cubettes tied the game at 2-2 in the third inning as Maurer hit her second triple of the game, and then Scheel single her home.
The game would remained tied until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Cubettes scored three runs to take the lead, 5-2. Maurer hit a fly ball to left field that was dropped by the Lady Bulldogs. Scheel reached on an error by the centerfielder.
Rodriguez hit a ground ball that was booted by the second baseman allowing Maurer to come home. Mabie hit a line drive that the Lady Bulldog third baseman made an error on that allowed Scheel and Rodriguez to score.
Brenham got two more runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. Stella Landry singled to start the inning. Liliana Gonzales then entered as a courtesy runner. McKenzie Tiemann bunted her to second. Maurer singled to center, and then took the extra bases on another Wylie error.
Scheel singled home Gonzales, and then Maurer scored on another error by the Lady Bulldog outfield. The runs increased the lead to 7-2 when the time limit expired.
Della Jasinski got the win going six innings allowing four hits, two unearned runs, one walk, and eight strikeouts.
The tournament continues today (Friday). The Cubettes will play Hallettsville at 1pm, and then face Liberty at 5pm.
