CUBS OPEN SANTA FE TOURNEY WITH A 6-3 WIN OVER BRAZOSWOOD

Rylan Wooten (Mark Whitehead)

The game got off to a late start, but that didn't matter as the Brenham Cubs picked up a 6-3 victory over Brazoswood to open the Santa Fe Tournament this (Thursday) afternoon.

Brazoswood jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first with a couple of runs off of starter Eric Aschenbeck.

Brenham came back to tie it in the top of the third inning. Rylan Wooten was hit by a pitch. Lane Sparks, Jacob Mabie, and Drake Bentke drew three straight walks. Bentke walked with the bases loaded, which scored Wooten with the first run of the game. Gunner Gee followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Sparks with the tying run 2-2.

The Cubs took their first lead in the top of the fifth inning. Sparks led off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and stole third. He would later score on a sacrifice fly by Bentke to make it 3-2 Brenham.

Brazoswood tie it 3-3 with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

In the sixth inning, Barrett Kohring and Rylan Wooten had a pair of two out singles. Sparks was intentionally walked. Mabie then drew a bases loaded walk that scored Kohring with the go-ahead run to make it 4-3 Cubs. Bentke also walked, which scored Wooten, and then Sparks scored on a wild pitch to put Brenham up 6-3.

Gunner Gee, who had come on in relief of Aschenbeck, secured the final four outs to get the win.

The Cubs still have to play Dawson this (Thursday) evening. The tournament continues tomorrow (Friday) with Brenham taking on Episcopal at 4pm and Santa Fe at 6pm. KWHI will have live coverage of both games beginning with the pregame at 3:35pm.
