BURTON PANTHERS DEFEAT ROUND TOP-CARMINE 11-1

Though it was pushed back a few days, the Burton Panthers did not disappoint their home crowd as they defeated the Round Top-Carmine Cubs 11-1 on Monday night.

RT-C got things started with a run in the top of the first inning to grab an early 1-0 lead.

The Panthers got the offense going in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out double by Chet Fritsch. The next batter up, Kaiden Kalkhake, was hit by a pitch. Then, Colby Beck brought them both home with a two-run triple that put Burton ahead 2-1.

In the bottom of the second inning, Vicente Veliz reached on a single, stole second, and stole third. He then scored on an infield hit by Pierson Spies to increase the Panthers' advantage to 3-1.

Burton would add three more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Carson Lauter reached on a single. He would then advance to second on a wild pitch, and score on an RBI single by Brady Grifin. Ryder Biggs also reached on a single. Veliz brought them both home on a two-run double, which gave the Panthers a 6-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Beck reached base on a single, and then moved to second on an error. Lauter followed with a two-run, inside-the-park homer to make it 8-1 Burton.

The Panthers finished the game off in the bottom of the fifth inning with three runs to enforce the mercy rule. Ryder Biggs and Veliz reached on back-to-back singles. Spies followed with a double that scored Biggs. Veliz scored on a passed ball. Fritsch then doubled down the left field line to score Spies with the 11th and final run needed to enforce the ten-run mercy rule.

Carson Lauter got the win by going all five innings for Burton, allowing only one hit, one run, walking four, and striking out eight.

The Panthers return to action this (Tuesday) afternoon as they host Richards in a doubleheader starting at 4:30pm in Burton.
