The Blinn College softball team dropped a Region XIV South Zone doubleheader to Angelina College on Wednesday in Lufkin, Texas.

The Buccaneers fell 10-2 (five innings) and 13-4 (six innings) in the two matchups, and slipped to fourth place in the South Zone behind the Roadrunners. Blinn is now 24-16 overall and 10-8 in the South.

“We came in here today looking to shore up the No. 3 seed, but unfortunately we relinquished it,” Blinn head coach Rick Church said. “It was a very disappointing day.”

In the opener, the Bucs built a 2-0 lead on an RBI single from freshman Alyssa Boozy in the top of the first and a run-scoring single from freshman Ripley Welker in the second. Angelina tied the game with runs in the second and third innings before tacking on eight in the fifth to force the run rule.

Boozy and freshman Alayna Calvillo each had two hits, with Calvillo adding a double to her day.

In the pitcher’s circle, Chloee Mason was the pitcher of record after the sophomore allowed five runs (earned) on eight hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

In game two, Blinn once again jumped out to an early advantage, this time securing a four-run cushion in the top of the first.

Sophomore Caitlyn Stevens smacked a two-run single; sophomore Emily Kristynik scored on an error, and freshman Haley Rust singled in Stevens to make it 4-0.

The Roadrunners got on the board with two runs in the home half of the third and took the lead with a five-run fourth. They added two more in the fifth and scored four times in the sixth to enact the run rule.

Blinn finished with 10 hits, led by a three-hit day for freshman Madison Dorrow. Rust added two hits.

In the circle, freshman Peyton Welker took the loss following 3 2/3 innings of work. She allowed five earned runs on three hits with three free passes and one strikeout.

Up next, the Bucs remain on the road for a non-conference twin bill against Baton Rouge Community College beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 21, in Baton Rouge, La.
