MOTORCYCLE CHASE LEADS TO 7 YEAR PRISON SENTENCE FOR GRIMES CO. MAN

A Grimes County man has been sentenced to 7 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of leading authorities on a high-speed, multi-county motorcycle chase.

Sheldon Wayne Stankevitz
(Grimes Co. Jail)

45-year-old Sheldon Wayne Stankevitz was sentenced last week in 12th District Court for Evading Detention in a Vehicle.  The Grimes County District Attorney’s Office says the charge comes from an incident on May 10, 2022 where an attempted traffic stop in Todd Mission resulted in an 8-mile chase into Waller County.

The chase began on FM 1774 when a Todd Mission police officer spotted a motorcycle, driven by Stankevitz, using the turn lane to pass another vehicle.  The motorcycle did not stop for the officer, instead accelerating and passing more vehicles in the turn lane.  The pursuit went onto Riley Road in Waller County, where the motorcycle continued to flee at high speeds, passing in no passing zones and driving into oncoming traffic.

According to the district attorney’s office, the chase paused when Stankevitz stopped the motorcycle and told the officer to let him go before fleeing again.  The officer eventually took Stankevitz into custody after he stopped a second time.

Evading Detention in a Vehicle is a 3rd degree felony.  Stankevitz’ punishment range was 2 to 20 years in prison due to a previous felony conviction in 2007 for a 1997 Delivery of a Controlled Substance case, after he failed to meet probation requirements.
