BURTON CITY COUNCIL DISCUSSES PLANNING FOR FUTURE, RECEIVES UPDATE ON WATER WELL FUNDING
Burton Mayor Karen Buck discussed future planning during her report to the city council on Tuesday.
Buck said it has been a quick 30 days for her in office, going through various training to get up to speed on municipal government.
Buck said there is still quite a bit of technical training to complete on topics like ordinances and emergency planning before being able to move to issues that more directly involve the public in preparing for what’s to come.
Burton Volunteer Fire Chief Billy Jasinski has been invited to next month’s council meeting on July 11th to discuss the fire department’s training, equipment and overall operations. Buck said she hopes to potentially start regularly inviting other people and organizations from the community to meetings to learn more about what is happening in Burton.
During Burton Secretary Angela Harrington’s report, she informed the council that the city is still playing a waiting game in terms of receiving the grant funding it has been allocated by the Brazos Valley Council of Governments for a second water well. She said there are several jurisdictions that are still not under contract for the funding they submitted for in November, and that for Burton, it would be “six months if we’re lucky.”
The council then held a brief workshop to go over city-owned property maintenance and its contract for groundskeeping and vegetation management. The workshop was to inform the council about pieces of the contract that needed further clarification, such as establishing firm numbers for budgeting purposes, proof of liability and more details about what types of chemicals may be used. The council will put the item on the regular agenda for next month’s meeting.
