WASHINGTON CO. HISTORICAL COMMISSION RECEIVES DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

The Washington County Historical Commission has been recognized by the state.
County commissioners at their meeting today (Tuesday) honored the historical commission after it earned a distinguished service award from the Texas Historical Commission for the 2022 year of service. Washington County is one of 83 county historical commissions to receive an award out of 197 that were eligible.
Washington County Historical Commission Chair Tom Stevens said the commission members are greatly deserving of this recognition.
County Judge John Durrenberger noted that in Stevens’ documentation submitted to qualify for the award, he listed eight ongoing projects along with two more that are in the works. Durrenberger called the commission’s activity and involvement “phenomenal.”

Commissioner Kirk Hanath thanked the historical commission for its service to future generations, saying this award has “set us aside” as one of a select group of counties that strives to maintain the history of its community.
After the end of regular session, the court opened a workshop to discuss dental, vision and life insurance coverage through the Texas Association of Counties pool. Discussion included what types of items are covered and payment amounts, as well as issues experienced by county employees with certain local providers, particularly dental, not counting as in-network with the county’s current insurance options.
Human Resources Director Angela Mlcak said a decision on what insurance the county will use will need to be made when the court meets next on Monday.
In other regular session business, commissioners:
- Approved moving the commissioners court’s next meeting from Tuesday, July 4 to Monday, July 3 due to the Independence Day holiday.
- Approved subdivision variance requests for land divisions fronting Cedar Hill Road in Precinct 3 and Century Farms Road in Precinct 4.
- Approved an oil and gas development permit for Magnolia Oil & Gas Operating, LLC for a site on Sandtown Road in Precinct 4.
- Accepted Childress Ranch Estates subdivision, a private gated community with one private road, Childress Ranch Drive (1.2 miles).
- Received monthly office and department reports.
