CITY OF LA GRANGE ASKING FOR WATER CONSERVATION

The City of La Grange is urging its water customers to voluntarily reduce their water use.

The city said in a press release issued on Friday that its normal water production capacity is 1,400,000 gallons per day, but one well is currently out of service.

The triggering criteria for mild drought conditions according to the city’s drought contingency plan is 90 percent of its production capacity, or 1,260,000 gallons per day.  Daily water usage, leading up to the city’s notice on Friday, was 1,057,000 gallons per day for the previous three days.

Residents are asked to keep a close eye on their outdoor water usage, as the city says lawn watering and other outdoor uses can account for 50 to 80 percent of home water use during the summer, but as much as half of that is wasted through poor watering practices.

When watering lawns, the city recommends watering no more than every other day at most and between the hours of 6-10 a.m. or 8-10 p.m.  It also suggests using low angle sprinklers that produce droplets of water; setting sprinklers properly so that the lawn, not the sidewalk or driveway, is watered; avoiding watering on windy days or cutting grass too short; choosing water-wise plants; washing cars with a bucket and a hose with a shut-off nozzle; and using a broom rather than a hose to sweep sidewalks and driveways.

Pamphlets on water conserving tips are available at La Grange City Hall and through the Texas Water Development Board website, www.twdb.texas.gov
