It seems to me with all of this community service time we should have no trash anywhere on the roadways of Washington County, but not the case so what are these criminals doing for community service?
Many are sent to the public library, or to Higgins Branch to work. The Sheriff’s Department of Washington County deems it ‘too risky’ to use these individuals to pick up trash or to do maintenance on county-owned property or even privately owned historic properties. Bell County, however, uses the individuals that have jobs during the week and who are serving their community service time in jail on the weekends to mow and trim and keep up rural cemeteries in Bell County; the last I heard, they maintain 17 of them, and most take about an hour to two to mow, trim and clean up and then they go to the next one. The way Bell Co. “encourages” participation is that they give them credit for 2 hours of their sentence for every 1 hour they work. It takes two deputies and they manage 8 to 10 individuals on that mowing crew.
