PARKS AND RECREATION BOARD HEARS UPDATES
The Brenham Parks and Recreation Advisory Board heard a number of reports on improvements during their meeting noon Wednesday. Brenham Public Works Director Dane Rau announced that they, after 4 years of waiting, have finally received a letter of “No permit required” from the Corps of Engineers having to do with the Brenham Family Park. The hold up was related to the approval by the Corps of Engineers of stream classification and whether or not permits were needed for improvements to take place around the minor swales and ravines on the site. This sets up the Notice to Proceed letter from the National Parks Service expected by the end of the year. The city has over $1.5 million to begin Phase 1(a) improvements, and bids are expected to be opened on those the first of next year.
Rau also covered the Turf Infield coverings for the softball fields at Hohlt Park. The project was originally set for last year but was pushed back to make sure the engineering was completed. The bids are due to be opened August 29th on the $771,000 project. The city will know then if two, three, or four infields and bullpen areas will be covered. The project is to be completed by February 2nd. The Aquatic Center Locker Room Refurbishment was also covered during the meeting. The $208,000 project will completely redo the 23-year-old locker rooms.
Kyle Branham went over the new 18-hole Disc Golf Course on the back side of the Brenham Family Park. The disc baskets have been set and now that a bridge has been built over the stream, concrete can now be poured on the throwing pads for each hole. The city has been working with a small group in the disc golf community to get the course to the condition it is in. The course is made up of short par 3’s and long par 4’s holes. The final thing is the signage for each hole. The goal is to have a QR code on each sign showing the player witch way to throw the disk.
