Firefighters were kept busy Tuesday afternoon with a pair of grass fires in Washington County.
Just after 2 p.m., several fire departments responded to a grass fire at FM 1948 and Yegua Creek Road.
Units that assisted included volunteer firefighters from the Rocky Creek, Gay Hill, Burton, Berlin, Meyersville and Somerville fire departments. Also on scene were the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, COPs, EMS and CERT team.

According to Rocky Creek Fire Chief Tim Mantey, the fire consumed 18 acres. Two structures were threatened but saved. Units cleared the scene shortly before 7 p.m.
Another grass fire call came in after 6 p.m. in the 10600 block of Highway 290 East in Chappell Hill. The Brenham and Chappell Hill fire departments arrived and found a fire in a road ditch that was crossing onto private property.
Chappell Hill units fought the fire inside of the property, while Brenham units handled the roadside fire. The fire was contained to less than an acre.
