WASHINGTON CO. COMMISSIONERS TABLE ACTION ON SOLID WASTE ORDINANCE

Action to proceed with creating a solid waste ordinance in Washington County will have to wait for at least one more week.

County commissioners tabled the item at their meeting this (Tuesday) morning in order to receive more information.  County Judge John Durrenberger said the county is “not prepared to move forward with this at this time.”

The ordinance being considered is meant to restrict landfill companies from picking their own plot of land and from operating in a county without the county having prior knowledge.  If approved, it would designate one specific location in the county as “not prohibited” for a landfill and prevent one from being placed anywhere else.

Steps involved with the process include approving the preparation of the ordinance, conducting a takings impact assessment and issuing a notice of a hearing for the proposed ordinance.

In other matters, the court approved a software license agreement between Washington County EMS and FirstWatch Solutions, Inc., a provider of data monitoring and biosurveillance software for public health and public safety organizations and agencies.  EMS Director Kevin Deramus said the purchase order for the quality improvement software was $72,392, with additional support and maintenance costs annually.  It will be paid with non-tax dollar revenue from the EMS tobacco settlement fund.

Also in court, commissioners:

  • Appointed election judges for the November 7th constitutional amendment election and approved an order of replacement appointments for judges and alternates.  Elections Administrator Carol Jackson said the order is to appoint replacements to serve out the remainder of the two-year term of some judges and alternates that were unable to serve the full term.
  • Approved a right-of-way permit application for the 2023 Washington County Fair trail ride.
  • Approved the 2024 sheriff’s and constable’s fees for Washington County.
  • Received a quarterly report from the Engineering and Development Services Department.
