CUBS DROP A WILD ONE TO HUNTSVILLE 39-36
The Brenham Cub Football Team came out on the short end of a 39-36 loss to the Huntsville Hornets in a game that saw multiple lead changes at the beautiful new Huntsville ISD Stadium.
Huntsville took the opening drive and marched down the field. They would score on a six yard run by Markcus Lewis. Joseph Mejia kicked the extra point to make it 7-0 Hornets with 9:39 to go in the first quarter.
Huntsville then recovered the kickoff and Lewis would score again on a two yard run. The Hornets added a two point conversion to make it 15-0 at the nine minute mark.
On the next drive, the Cubs would lose Jakoby Dixon for the remainder of the game due to an ankle injury. He had just one carry for a loss of two yards.
Brenham would finally get on the board on a 32 yard field goal by Bleu Cienega with 5:55 left in the first quarter. That cut the Huntsville lead to 15-3.
The Cubs got the ball back and Jordan Harvey would find Jose Castillo wide open for a 33 yard touchdown pass. Brenham went for two, but didn't get it. However, the lead was down to 15-9 with three minutes left.
The Cubs got the ball back one more time in the first quarter and scored on a two yard run by Harvey. Cienega added the extra point to give Brenham their first lead 16-15 with 1:21 left.
Huntsville had the only score of the second quarter at 7:17 on a two yard touchdown run by Braylon Phelps. The two point conversion try was no good. However, the Hornets went into the locker room at halftime with a 21-16 lead.
The Cubs opened the third quarter with a trick play as Chris Guidry would find Jordan Harvey on a 12 yard touchdown pass. The two point conversion try was no good, but Brenham was back in front 22-21 at the 9:13 mark.
Huntsville would then get back on the scoreboard on a 22 yard pass from Austin Taylor to Savion Contah. This time, the two point conversion was successful, and the Hornets were up 29-22 with 7:20 left in the third.
Brenham would then tie it on a 34 yard touchdown pass from Harvey to Guidry, and Cienega added the extra point to knot it up at 29-29 going into the fourth quarter.
Mejia would hit a 41 yard field goal that put Huntsville back in front 32-29 with 11:10 left in the game.
That would be followed by a Brenham drive that ended on a one yard touchdown run by Harvey and a Cienega kick to give the Cubs a 36-32 lead with 9:20 to go.
On the Hornets last chance drive, Taylor found Melton Green on a 57 yard completion to set up a first and goal. Taylor then scored on a four yard run and Mejia added the extra point to make it 39-32 with 1:19 remaining.
The Cubs got the ball and took it down to their 24-yard line. They lined up long range kicker Ivan Salazar for a 41 yard field goal attempt to try to tie it and send it into overtime, but the kick missed.

Mental errors by the Cubs coupled with a number of very questionable calls by the game officials was just too much to overcome. I’m very proud of our Cubs for hanging tough, but this one is going to sting for a while.
