LEE COUNTY CENTER FOR THE ARTS MOVING FORWARD

The Lee County Center for the Arts took a step closer toward making the holding of their first plays in their own facility a reality.

The facility, which is located at 115 West Austin Street in Giddings, was donated to the LCCA by the previous owner several years ago.

However, due to its deteriorating condition, the organization has thus far been prevented from doing anything with it.

LCCA President Karen Walpole told the Giddings Times that over the last six months, they have fixed up the building enough to be granted a certificate of occupancy by the City of Giddings.

Work has included new wiring, plumbing, lighted emergency exit signs, and installing fire extinguishers.

Walpole said that most of the work has been done by volunteers.

They are also working on revamping the stage area, plus, they will need to make roof repairs and to install an HVAC.

There is no timetable on when the work will be finished. The work is being done as they are able to pay for it.

Their first play is a comedy called,  “Separate Beds,” and it is tentatively scheduled to be performed on January 20 and 27.

Walpole said in the Times article that they are going to be using local performers and those from other play houses.

Once all the work is completed, she and the other LCCA members are hoping for an art and music performance gallery, and to possibly start holding classes.
