  1. There seems to be quite a few of caring people in the comments section. Have any of you reached out to Mr. Hicks to get him help? Or do yo just expect someone else to take care of him?

  2. Wow! those comments are all over the place. they want the police to find him a place to stay that is not jail, but yet his family says he will not stay and runs off. If people would quit fighting everything the police do and sit down with them and ask them what is the best way to handle this. The police do not want them in their jail anymore than he wants to be there, but jail is safer than on the streets. They can take him to the hospital, but what is the local hospital going to do? They are not equipped to handle mentally ill individuals full time. They could haul him to one of the state hospitals, but the beds are limited there too. There are little to no resources to help the homeless or mentally ill in our area. Has anyone looked into how much it costs to run a state hospital? It is not cheap. what about after care? who is going to make sure that the person continues their medication once they leave? It is hard on the families to care for them, especially if the parents are elderly or the siblings have young kids. This problem has been going on for years. Until we can come up with an ethical way to care for these individuals, they will continue in this vicious cycle.

  3. Brenham needs to stop arresting sick people that needs mental help, there should be a empty building stable like Brenham state school to get citizens help on there feet, jail is not the place,

  4. This man is homeless he said he had 5 days to appear in court for a eviction but before that he was taken to a mental hospital in Austin, he. needs MHMR Help….Brenham police knows this man he is harmless been in Brenham all his life a church man His mind snapped get him the help he needs..At least he’s out the cold and rain but with hard core criminals not right..

  5. It was hopefully obvious to the officers that this older fellow was trying to stay alive, if he truly had no shelter in sub-freezing temps. I would have also figured out a way to take him to jail!!! A warm cot and a blanket were surely welcome!!

  6. Robert is mentally ill and the police know who he is and they know he is mentally ill, instead of arresting mentally ill people and putting them in jail and putting them right back on the streets why is so hard for them to get help? He’s off his medication, tried to get help from a judge that didn’t work and he is homeless , there was a another lady they kept arresting her and putting her back on the streets until someone finally hit her and killed her?

  7. This man needs help. He is mentally ill. Mr. Hicks stopped taking his medicine some time ago believing the medicine will kill him. He is homeless and been seeking shelter along Main St. for some time now sleeping in the cold weather, The Church have knowledge to Robert Hicks presents eating and getting shelter as he can, The authorities has been called and aware that Robert Hicks was homeless as well as in the cold temperatures sleeping on porches etc. In a sleeping bag trying to block the cold weather reports will show they were called out offering him bottles of water leaving him out in the cold. This man is Mentally ill and needs Help. I’m asking that the judge have him evaluated so that he can get back on his meds. As well as get the help he so desperately need?

    1. Local police department doesn’t care about the mentally Ill. They’d rather lock them up instead of resources to help individuals like mr. Hicks. Hope he gets the help he needs soon

  8. This man has so many family members in Washington County!!! Why aren’t they providing a place for him to stay…especially when it’s extremely cold outside???

    1. Well the family have tried to get him help and shelter and food you don’t know anything about a mentally ill person so don’t speak on something you don’t know !!!

    2. Yes he does however when a person is mentally ill family has no way of holding him hostage to keep him inside. Keyword mentally ill, he’s not in his right mind currently and he is turning away help from everyone. Unless you’re involved and know for a fact what’s going on please refrain from saying what “family” should be doing!!

      1. So the family is unable to help the poor guy because they cannot hold him inside against his will, but the police are bad guys for holding him inside against his will?
Seems like he should be committed. Isn’t that something the family could and should do?

Most of the insane asylums closed because the public saw them as inhumane (One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest), then they wonder why there’s not enough space for the insane.

  9. The police was well aware that this man had no shelter during the cold weather and they chose to leave him outside in the cold.

    1. I know they have to make decisions to protect our community. But obviously this man doesn’t look like a danger to Brenham. Maybe he was trying to get to a warm place. Brenham police can use some empathy and kindness. We’re not LA or NYC.

      1. I actually had an experience with this gentleman. He actually threatened my life and was harassing my elderly grandmother and my handicapped dad.

      2. we will not have to worry about him now he will be in the warm dry jail the law pertains to everyone no mater what and everyone needs to respect and obey the law or else we will be like LA and NYC

      3. He attempted to break into a building. That’s illegal. He got a warm bed to sleep in at the jail. Happy now?

    2. The police aren’t responsible for housing anyone except lawbreakers. What do you mean by stating “they left him outside”?

      1. This is what it means “to be left outside”. Your family has tried in Many Many MANY instances to help you and you refuse the help. You take medications for mental illness, but you decide not to take them. So there you are homeless Mr. B. And you are not in your right mind, and you think it’s funny and a joke that a jail will give mental ill people help? You are outside, so keep your nose outside as well because you don’t have the proper information or power to judge. And they say where is the Love and help, but you read comments that has no form of encouragement or willingness to help. Sorry for the long comment.#showlovenothate#
