BUCCANEER MEN GET ROAD WIN OVER LAMAR STATE
The Blinn College men's basketball team stayed hot with an 87-73 Region XIV road win over Lamar State College-Port Arthur on Saturday in Port Arthur, Texas.
The Buccaneers improved to 18-6 overall and 9-4 in the region standings thanks to their fifth consecutive region win.
"A road win in this conference is big any time you can get it," Blinn head coach Scott Schumacher said. "Lamar State is tough to beat at home, but I thought our guys came out and played really well."
"Well" could also be used to describe how the Bucs have been playing during their winning streak, but that may be an understatement.
In its victories over Victoria College, then-No. 8 Lee College, Angelina College, Jacksonville College, and Lamar State, Blinn has averaged 87 points per game and won by an average of 15 points.
The Bucs are within striking distance of Region XIV South Division leader Lee (11-2) with six region games remaining.
Blinn added Saturday's contest to the win column thanks to a well-rounded offensive showing, and a tremendous effort on the glass.
Five Bucs scored at least 10 points, while five players also had at least six rebounds. Freshman wing Anthony Isaac continued his recent offensive tear with a team-high 19 points to give him 13 double-digit scoring performances in a row. He also had a team-best eight rebounds.
Sophomore guard Masiah Gilyard finished with 17 points and six rebounds; freshman guard Reese Miller had 14 points; sophomore forward Jamine Charles tallied 12 points and seven rebounds; and sophomore guard Patrick Neal Jr. chipped in 10 points, seven assists, and six rebounds. Sophomore guard Jadin Johnson had nine points, seven rebounds, and six assists.
"Our guys did a tremendous job of moving around and sharing the ball, which is evident by how many guys scored in double figures," Schumacher said. "Lamar State did a good job of cutting our lead to nine points a couple of times in the second half, but I thought we stayed composed to keep them at arm's length after halftime."
The Bucs led 40-26 going into the break.
Blinn will look to push its streak to six wins when it faces region foe Coastal Bend College at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Beeville, Texas. The Bucs and Cougars met in Brenham, Texas, on Jan. 24, and Blinn is hoping to avenge that 79-71 home loss.
