CUBETTES BEAT CALDWELL 6-1; ROBERTS GETS WIN #200

The Brenham Cubette Softball Team got the 2024 season off to a good start with a 6-1 victory over the Caldwell Lady Hornets last (Tuesday) night at Alumni Field.

The win was also a big one, because it was career victory #200 for Head Coach Katie Roberts.

Brenham got the scoring started with a five-run first inning. Avery Maurer led it off with a triple. Kaylyn Rodriguez reached on an error when Caldwell Centerfielder Brean Sims dropped a fly ball. That also allowed Maurer to score. Sarah Mabie followed with the first of her two doubles in the game to bring home Rodriguez to make it 2-0.

Annie Beckendorf walked, and then Kaylie Rodriguez laid down a sacrifice bunt. Halle Scheel followed with an RBI single that scored Mabie, and made it 3-0 Cubettes. Kylie Baker then singled home Beckendorf and Scheel to increase the Brenham lead to 5-0.

It would stay that way until the top of the fourth. The Lady Hornets got their lone run of the game off of a solo homer by Kysen Toney.

The Cubettes tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Scheel walked, stolen second, and later scored on an error.

Della Jasinski got the win going four innings, allowing one earned run, two hits, one walk, two HBP, and striking out five. Heidi Busker pitched two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit, one walk, and striking out three. Kylie Baker closed it out in the seventh with a scoreless inning, no hits, no walks, and two strikeouts.

Next up, the Cubettes will host the annual Leadoff Classic Thursday-Saturday. On Thursday, they will face Huffman at 11am, and Abilene Wylie at 5pm. KWHI will broadcast the Abilene Wylie game beginning with the pregame at 4:35pm.
