BRENHAM PLANNING & ZONING TO HEAR TWO ACCESSORY DWELLING UNIT REQUESTS
Two specific use permit requests for accessory dwelling units (ADUs) will come before the Brenham Planning and Zoning Commission when it meets on Monday.

The requests come from Dara Childs and are for property in single-family residentially zoned areas in the 900 block of West Jefferson Street and the 300 block of Hampshire Drive.
For the first request on West Jefferson Street, the proposed 525-square-foot structure would be a one-bed, one-bath detached ADU intended to serve as a rental investment or an accommodation for guests. City staff believes that the development may contradict the existing neighborhood culture and would not be in character with nearby residential properties that are brick, ranch style homes and less dense lots. The city says it has received several calls against the proposed development.

The second request on Hampshire Drive would also call for a 525-square-foot, one-bed, one-bath ADU to act as a rental or guest house. City staff says while it may not align with the current neighborhood culture, the structure itself will likely not be out of character with the surrounding neighborhood. One citizen comment has come in against the proposal.
Staff recommends denial of the West Jefferson Street request and approval of the Hampshire Drive request.
The commission will meet Monday at 5:15 p.m. at Brenham City Hall.
