COLLEGE STATION RALLIES TO BEAT CUBS 11-7

Lightning struck twice in the series between the Brenham Cubs and College Station, as the Cougars came back to defeat the Cubs 11-7 in their District 21-5A game last (Thursday) night at Fireman's Park.

College Station managed only six hits in the game, but took advantage of eight walks issued by the Cub pitching staff, and six errors in the field by the defense.

The Cougars scored first on a sacrifice fly by Cade Corcoran in the top of the first that brought home Wilson Stapp to make it 1-0 College Station.

Brenham responded in the bottom of the first with four runs. Owen Finke drew a leadoff walk, and then came in to score on a two-run homer by Drake Bentke that put Brenham in front 2-1.

Luke Hardy followed that up with a single, and Tanner Reese drew a walk. Brody Hemann courtesy ran for Reese. Landry Mendoza singled home Hardy, while Austin Maurer hit a sacrifice fly to score Hemann and increase the Brenham lead to 4-1.

The Cougars came back with four runs in the top of the third inning to take a 5-4 lead, and then added an additional run in the fourth inning to make it 6-4.

Brenham tied it at 6-6 with two runs on the bottom of the fourth inning. Caleb Maurer led it off with a single, took second on a wild pitch, stole third, and then came home on a balk.

Brady Rau and Bentke drew back-to-back walks, and Luke Hardy was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Reese hit a sacrifice fly to score Rau with the tying run.

The Cougars came back with three runs in the top of the sixth after the Cubs struggled to field bunts. College Station grabbed a 9-6 lead.

Brenham came back with a run in the bottom if the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Hardy that scored Rau to trim the gap to 9-7.

College Station tacked on two more runs on three Cub errors in the top of the seventh to pad their lead to 11-7, which ended up being the final.

Next up, the Cubs will face A&M Consolidated Tuesday at 7pm at Fireman's Park (6:35pm pregame on KWHI and KWHI.com).
