CITY OF BRENHAM RECEIVES ‘CLEAN’ AUDIT REPORT
Brenham City Councilmembers received a positive audit report for the past fiscal year during their meeting on Thursday.
The report covered the fiscal year that ended September 30th. Michele Kwiatkowski of Seidel Schroeder said the city had a “clean”, unmodified opinion on the audit, with no issues of noncompliance.
Kwiatkowski said the city increased its net position and performed favorably to budget over the past year, with higher revenue and lower expenses than projected.
Mayor Atwood Kenjura commended the work done by the city’s financial team and Seidel Schroeder in completing the audit. Commenting on the city’s financial standing, he said, “We’re in good shape.”

Also during Thursday’s council meeting, councilmembers accepted a bid from Solid Bridge Construction in the amount of $567,979 for Carrington Lane roadway and drainage improvements. The project involves widening the roadway from 20 feet to 26 feet of new asphalt, adding concrete curb and gutter, adding a cul-de-sac for better maneuverability at the dead end, and inlets and drainage pipe to provide better drainage.
The city received $350,000 in funding through the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Community Development Block Grant program. The city will put $70,000 toward the grant as matching funds and will need to contribute $192,486 from certificates of obligation and $115,493 from the city drainage fund, totaling $307,979 above the grant amount, to complete the project. Public Works Director Dane Rau said he expects the project to start in the next two to three months.
In other business, the council:
- Approved a customer service contract with the Lower Colorado River Authority for tree trimming services near electrical lines, to be provided by McCoy Tree Surgery, Inc. The annual contract is for $148,659.
- Granted a non-exclusive franchise to Waste Solutions USA, LLC to operate a roll-off container service for residents, businesses and industries inside city limits.
- Met in executive session to discuss personnel matters pertaining to the position of fire chief and consult with the city attorney about the Brenham Municipal Airport. No action was slated to be taken.
