(Austin Co. Jail)

On April 9, the Austin County Sheriff’s Office received reports that an armed man was waving a firearm and shooting at vehicles near the Millheim community on FM 949.

They were also notified that a man had committed an armed robbery in the vicinity of the shootings.

Deputies arrived on the scene and took the suspect, 35-year-old Joseph Mesa, into custody for a first-degree felony charge of Aggravated Robbery and a third-degree felony charge of Deadly Conduct.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, at the time of the arrest, Mesa was out on a $100,000 bond for an Aggravated Sexual Assault of Child charge.

He had also been indicted on a first-degree felony of Continuous Sexual Abuse of Child, and was supposed to be in court that day for the charge.

The Austin County District Attorney’s Office requested that Mesa’s bond be forfeited and that a warrant be issued for Failure to Appear. Judge Jeff Steinhauser signed the warrant and set Mesa’s bond at “No Bond.”

At the same time, the Sealy Police Department had been investigating Mesa involving allegations that he kidnapped an adult female earlier in the day. She was later found by Austin County law enforcement and received medical treatment.

On April 10, Sealy Police Investigators obtain warrants that charged Mesa for Aggravated Kidnapping, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Attempted Murder, and Interference with an Emergency Call.

The case remains under a further investigation.  If you have any information related to this incident, please call the Austin County Sheriff’s Office at 979-865-3111, or the Sealy Police Department at 979-885-2913.
