LADY PANTHERS SWEEP LEON 2-0 TO WIN BI-DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP
The Burton Lady Panthers got a run-rule victory over the Leon Lady Cougars 14-4 in six innings Saturday afternoon in Navasota.
With the win, Burton sweeps the series 2-0, wins Bi-District, and moves on to the Area Round of the playoffs next week against Thrall. Thrall dropped their series opener against Johnson City on Friday, but then came back to sweep them in a doubleheader on Saturday.
Leon got the first run in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead.
However, it didn't take the Lady Panthers long to respond. Kalli Pohl drew a walk and Amaya Williams singled. That brought Bailey Glaesmann to the plate, and she responded with a three run homer to give Burton a 3-1 lead.
The inning continued with Aerynn Huntsman getting a single, stealing second, and then scoring on an RBI single by Melanie Wood to make it 4-1 Lady Panthers.
Burton put up three more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Kelsi Hohlt drew a lead-off walk stole second, and then went to third on a single by Reagan Roemer. Kalli Pohl then laid down a suicide squeeze that allowed Hohlt to score. Roemer and Pohl later scored on a throwing error by Leon to take a 7-1 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Burton added two more runs. Wood and Hohlt drew back-to-back walks, and Dowling followed with a single to load the bases. Roemer and Pohl drew bases loaded walks that scored Wood and Hohlt to extend the Lady Panther advantage to 9-1.
The score would remain the same until the top of the fifth when Leon scored to cut the deficit to 9-2. Hohlt singled and then scored when Williams reached on an error. That gave Burton a 10-2 lead.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Lady Cougars scored twice to make it a 10-4 game.
Burton followed by putting an exclamation point on the game in the bottom of the sixth. Jennifer Lopez reached on an error, and then Woods and Hohlt followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases again. Dowling singled home Lopez, Roemer singled home Wood, and Pohl singled home Hohlt to make it 13-4.
That left it all up to Amaya Williams, who came through with an RBI double that scored Roemer with the 14th run, and put the mercy rule into effect.
Bailey Glaesmann was the beneficiary of the offense as she went six innings, allowed three hits, four runs, only two were earned, walked three, and struck out 13 to get the win.
