BLINN STUDENTS RECOGNIZED FOR TUTORING AT BRENHAM ELEMENTARY

Brenham Elementary School recently celebrated the remarkable contributions of twelve Blinn College athletes who dedicated their time as tutors for students during the Spring semester of 2024.

The initiative marks a significant revival of volunteer programs at Brenham ISD (BISD), facilitated through a collaborative effort between the Leading & Learning Department, the local volunteer organization C.U.B.S., which stands for Citizens United for Brenham Schools, and Blinn College.

However, this semester saw the resurgence of volunteer tutoring programs with a fresh approach.

Blinn Athletic Director Scott Schumacher and his staff surveyed athletes whose practice, game, and competition schedules would fit with the Spring semester at BISD.

Six Blinn football players and six Blinn cheer and dance team members were selected by their coaches to tutor students at Brenham Elementary School.

Under the guidance of BISD's Leading & Learning Department, tutor volunteers, including Blinn athletes, underwent comprehensive training sessions to prepare for their roles.

Over a ten-week period, students and tutors engaged in two 30-minute sessions per week, witnessing remarkable progress in reading and vocabulary skills.

In addition to academic support, a fundraising and book donation campaign was initiated to provide each tutored student with a 'BOOKS in a BAG' collection.

Generous contributions from local tutors, club members, Calvary Baptist Church, the VFW organization, and a local family significantly enriched the reading resources available to the students.

As part of a farewell celebration, the Blinn athlete tutors presented their students with 'BOOKS in a BAG,' encouraging them to continue honing their newfound skills over the summer.
